Our Wellington
Show was a great success with a high standard of exhibits. It was
pleasing to see more members growing Tryphillas in saucers and also
attempting various styles and shapes. Numbers were down but the
quality was good. A special "Well Done" to the Novices
who not only put entries in their dedicated classes but tackled
other classes too.
A tribute to Ted Sweetman
was set up in the Hall Foyer with a verse written by Colleen Debbage
and the Show was dedicated to Ted's memory. A show without Ted
taking an active role seemed most unusual.
Lesley Berryman won
the Novice Trophy, Eddie Alleman the Senior, Helen Moore the Open,
Trish Devitt the Decorative and Jan Patterson N.Z. Species. Special
Awards were Lesley Berryman Best Novice Plant, Jan Patterson Best
Plant, Eddie Alleman Best Species, Best Basket & Most Points
in Show.
On the Saturday evening
we enjoyed a Banquet at a local Chinese Restaurant and this was
a popular choice with a "repeat please" in the future
to our Show Secretary Charlotte Heather.
The effort required
to put on a two-day show is becoming a severe test for aging joints
and muscles. However, we had a discussion about this at our May
meeting and decided to take more paracetamol and carry on. None
of the options we looked at seemed to match our Show
In March a past member
Glenys Knight who is a forensic technologist gave us a fascinating
talk on some of her work. A crime scene will usually have some
DNA somewhere, whether it be fingerprints, footprints, saliva,
sperm, perspiration, blood, hair, broken nails etc. which can
lead to the offender. It is clearly getting tougher to be crook
and get away with it. Glenys has a licence to grown cannabis.
She grew it under the guidance of an expert who had done his time
for growing it to find out what yields could be expected. This
information is needed to rebut the claims of the crims that they
were not getting much for their efforts. Glenys' studies showed
they were doing very nicely. She is heading overseas to present
a paper on her studies to a conference in New Orleans
